I have also found that the PS3 is still the KING for media. I know that is what you are trying to avoid so try one of the other ways. I know it's a pain, but I got a 128 gig USB stick formatted to FAT32 and I pretty much plug it in to a USB port on the TV and it works amazingly well. No thanks to the extra heat and wear and tear. I have just a i5 and 8 gig of ram and that gets the usage up near 100% on my PC. I do use Plex and have a killer set-up, but I hate transcoding. It works great for every device except TiVo. So far the best I have found is a device like the My Book Live. I have used every combination of software and devices ever made for this.
